Wasurenagusa, a small flowering plant that produces 5mm-sized blooms from March to May. While it’s possible to cultivate the seeds, the seedlings are readily available at gardening stores and home centers starting in winter, making it easier to obtain one. Originally an annual herb that blooms every year, Wasurenagasa is grown as a perennial in Japan due to its sensitivity to heat.

As an annual herb, it will naturally shed its foliage after blooming, requiring little maintenance and making it suitable for beginners. If you plant the seeds in February, you can enjoy the blooms from March to May, with four months of flowering potential. The seedlings are available at a reasonable price around 200 yen per pot, so why not try planting several and creating a beautiful purple carpet in your garden?

To coax tulips to bloom amidst the Wastrenaga’s floral display, preparation begins in late autumn of the previous year. From September to October, sow the Wastrenaga seeds and raise seedlings. Additionally, around this time, tubers will start becoming available at nurseries, so be sure to acquire some. When selecting tulips, consider those that bloom early or late, as well as those that align with the Wastrenaga’s blooming period.

For optimal results, choose high-statured varieties that grow over 40cm in height, allowing them to tower above the Wastrenaga’s flowers.

Tubers should be planted when the soil temperature has dropped to 10-15°C or lower. Planting them too early will result in weak stems and reduced blooming potential during the spring bloom. Instead, plant tubers first in late autumn, allowing the Wastrenaga seedlings to be planted afterwards. Regular watering is crucial after that.

By around March, the Wastrenaga will begin blooming, followed by the tulips bursting forth from their blue-green buds.

In a park in Yokohama, for instance, Wastrenaga and other flowers including French lavender, North Pole, and tulips bloom together, with the lush foliage of Kallex adding to the scenery.

While the iconic Wasurenagusa is often associated with its blue flowers, pink varieties also exist. The charm of these small pink blooms becomes even more pronounced when paired with other flowers. A personal recommendation is the spring-blooming Muskari (left photo), whose delicate blue blooms complement the pink flowers nicely. Similarly, the anemone’s fluffy petals swaying gently in the wind (right photo) create a harmonious combination that highlights the beauty of both colors.
